Everyday banking and card questions, answered straight
No hedging, no upsell — where the honest answer is 'it depends', we say exactly what it depends on.
What actually makes a credit card 'premium' or a 'black card'?
In practice it's the fee tier and the benefits bundle, not a specific color. Premium cards charge higher annual fees ($95 to $695+) in exchange for travel credits, airport lounge access, elevated rewards rates, and sometimes an invitation-only application process. There's no legal definition of 'black card' — it's industry shorthand for the top invitation-only tier some issuers offer.
Is Amex's Centurion Card really invitation-only?
Publicly, yes — American Express does not publish an application for its top-tier card, and the general reporting is that it's by invitation based on spending history. We don't have a relationship with Amex that lets us verify exact criteria, so treat any specific spend threshold you read elsewhere as an estimate, not a guarantee.
What's the most common checking account fee people miss?
The monthly maintenance fee that gets waived only if you hit a minimum balance or direct deposit amount you didn't realize you'd fallen below. The second most common is out-of-network ATM fees, which are charged by both your bank and the ATM owner.
How do I know if a rewards card's annual fee is worth it?
Multiply your typical monthly spend in the card's bonus categories by the reward rate, times 12, and compare that dollar figure to the annual fee plus any interest you'd pay on a carried balance. Our card-matcher calculator does this in one step — if you don't clear the fee with rewards alone, the card isn't paying for itself yet.
What's the difference between overdraft protection and an overdraft fee?
Overdraft protection links a savings account or credit line to your checking account so a shortfall is covered automatically, usually for a small transfer fee. Without it, the bank can still cover the transaction but charges a flat overdraft fee, commonly $27–$35, per occurrence.
Does any of this apply outside the United States?
No. Overdraft rules, fee disclosure formats, and card network practices described on this site are specific to the United States. Banking regulation and typical fee structures differ meaningfully in other countries.
Can I get a premium card with average credit?
Most premium travel and rewards cards are marketed toward good-to-excellent credit, generally a FICO score above 670–700, though issuers weigh income and existing relationships too. We cannot tell you whether you would be approved for any specific card.
What's a foreign transaction fee and which cards skip it?
It's typically a 1–3% surcharge added to purchases made in a foreign currency or processed abroad. Most premium travel cards waive it entirely, which is one of the more concrete reasons a frequent traveler might justify the annual fee.
Should I close an old card I don't use anymore?
Usually not immediately. Closing a card can shorten your average account age and reduce your total available credit, both of which can affect your credit score. If it has no annual fee, leaving it open and unused typically costs nothing.
How many overdrafts before it's worth switching banks?
There's no fixed number, but if you're paying two or more overdraft fees a month, the math almost always favors switching to a bank with no-overdraft-fee checking or setting up a linked savings transfer, both of which are free ongoing changes.
What's a statement credit and how is it different from cash back?
A statement credit reduces your card balance directly rather than paying out as cash or points you redeem separately. Many premium cards use statement credits (travel, dining, streaming) to offset the annual fee — but only if you actually use the specific service they're tied to.
Do you sell or recommend specific credit cards?
We describe how card tiers and fees work in general terms and link to comparison tools and partner pages where relevant. We are not a card issuer, we do not guarantee approval odds, and we don't tell you which specific card to apply for.
